Westworld Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Westworld season 1 ended last year and helped HBO bring home $1.5 billion in revenue. The show was incredibly successful but the sheer scale of the series forced the showrunners, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, to skip a year and release season 2 in 2018. In this mega post, we are bringing in everything we know about Westworld season 2 so far. [Note that We’ll keep updating this post once or twice a week. So you can bookmark this page and return for new updates every week]

Fun fact: First things first. S2 is going to be more ambitious and bloodier. Perhaps you know that Lisa Joy is making her directorial debut this season with episode 4. While speaking to a journalist, at the 2017 Emmy Awards, Jonathan Nolan said to his wife and fellow Westworld co-creator:

“You’ve [Joy] made it far more violent and disturbing than we ever intended. It was quite a placid episode, and Lisa has kind of turned it into a bloodbath.”

If this isn’t exciting, I don’t know what is.

Westworld Season 2: Release Date

Filming for season 2 began in July 2017. HBO has officially announced that the show is scheduled to return in Spring 2018, which means around March, April or May.

While we are yet to get an exact Westworld Season 2 premiere date, if you ask me, Westworld is probably going to take Game of Thrones’ schedule in April. Programming president Casey Bloys told EW that GoT S8 will most likely roll out in late 2018 or early 2019. They need to fill in the gap, right?

Westworld Season 2 Cast: Returning & New

We have several returning casts confirmed along with a couple of new ones.

The regular cast members who are returning for Westworld season 2 are Loius Herthum, Talulah Riley, Evan Rachel WoodJimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins Jr. Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Rodrigo SantoroLeonardo Lam, and Ptolemy Slocum.

In the season 2 trailer, we spotted James Marsden, Jeffrey Wright, and Luke Hemsworth.

Ben Barnes has been pretty tight-lipped about his possible to season 2. On being directly asked, here’s what he said:

“As far as I know, I’m finished with Westworld, and as far as I know, we’ve wrapped on season one, and I don’t know what’s happening after that. And that’s all I’m allowed to say.”

Since Jimmi is returning, we can hope for flashbacks where we can catch a glimpse of what happened to Logan and how exactly William transformed into Man in Black.

Is Anthony Hopkins Returning to Westworld Season 2?

Westworld Season 2 Anthony Hopkins: Earlier Jonathan Nolan speculated that “the sacrifice he [Dr. Ford] makes at the end of the first season is very real,” and went on to say that his presence will be felt in s2 because the story will dig into the park’s origin (more on this in the plot detail section). Perhaps a younger Anthony Hopkins then.

Check out this VFX breakdown of the young Dr. Ford by Important Looking Pirates.

But of recent, the Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann told in an interview that she has had to put stop to her personal project, a film starring herself and Anthony Hopkins, because of the latter’s commitment to Westworld. Does this mean the actor will be seen in season 2? We are not sure, but we can certainly hope.

New Cast Members of Westworld S2

Speaking of new additions, we have quite a handful.

Katja Herbers (The Leftovers) and Neil Jackson (Blade: The Series), Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom), Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings) & Fares Fares (Tyrant) are joining as regulars while Betty Gabriel (Good Girls Revolt) will be appearing in a recurring role.

Skarsgård is playing white-collar guy and Nadal will be part of the technical team in the park. Gabriel works with the team trying to bring order in the chaos that follows season one’s finale. We’ll probably find her working under Stubbs.

We heard from Louis Herthum that Zahn McClarnon (Longmire) is also part of the show, but the news hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Westworld Season 2 Trailer

The teaser trailer for Westworld Season 2 was launched in at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con. Here, take a look.

It’s worth noting that the song in the trailer is “I’ve Gotta Be Me,” by Sammy Davis Jr. and it’s pretty rad because the lyrics fit in perfectly and syncs with the scenes.

While the teaser is very exciting, we are counting days for the release of the Westworld S2 trailer. I’ll post it here, when it launches, most likely in 2018.

Meanwhile, new footages of the show have emerged. The with the finale of Game of Thrones Season 7, HBO released a video called ‘Beyond Game of Thrones: The Great Unknown’. Skip to 1:35 mins for new Westworld footage.

Westworld Season 2 Screencaps

In the video above, there are only three scenes and we grabbed the screencaps. Needless to say, it looks very promising.

Westworld Season 2 Plot: 7 New Details

Before we jump into what to expect in Westworld Season 2, here’s a recap of season one by none other than own very own William a.k.a Jimmi Simpson.

The following nuggets are based on several interviews and the crucial takeaways from Comic-Con panel this year.

1. Time Jump

To start off, I must point out that co-creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Loy have said Westworld 2 won’t pick up where season 1 left. So there’s a time-jump.

2. Constructs of the Hosts

They also said that fans will get to peek into the construct of the host in the upcoming season. We’ll be exploring the mechanical side, i.e. the artificial biology of the hosts.

“Their construction and their power source is something we’re really going to get into during season 2,” Nolan said. “They’re closer to biological than they are mechanical, but they don’t suffer brain death the same way we do……..There are advantages and disadvantages to being a host. [In] season 2, we’ll be exploring more of the nuts and bolts of what they are—as the hosts themselves are trying to understand.”

3. No Multiple Timelines

The showrunners also revealed two significant nuggets at the Paley Fest 2017.

One, they are done with multiple timelines because they don’t want to fall into a repetitive pattern of storytelling in Westworld. The multiple timelines were used because it felt like an appropriate way to tell Dolores’ story. “It showed how Dolores felt.”

“We never had any intention of staying in one place. We don’t want to shoot on the same sets for 10 years… and want to blow the sets up and move on to another piece of the story,” Nolan said.

4. Backstories

Evan though the creators are not too keen on multiple timelines they will need to look back if what Evan said is to be true.

“I think we’ll be seeing a lot of what Westworld is capable of, a little more backstory, how it came to be, why it’s there, you know..there is a lot of pieces filled in.”

5. New Music Piece

Joy gave a solid hint about a certain music piece they are excited for. Apparently, the husband-wife showrunners were inspired by “watching children’s movies [with their daughter].”

6. Dolores Gone Full Wyatt

Other than these Evan Rachel Wood said we are going to see a badder perhaps more violent Dolores Abernathy. In an exciting little nugget, the actress revealed her expectation from the character she plays.

Speaking of Dolores new image that we saw in the teaser trailer, Wood says, “she has been pushed a little too far.”

“The whole time, people were rooting for her to break free and take control. To finally have that image of her with this disheveled blue dress and bullets across her chest and her hair blowing in the wind, free and wild, and taking control of her life again… yes, she’s gunning down people. But in her defense, she has been pushed a little too far. (Laughs.)”

7. Westworld Season 2 is Marked By Chaos

Westworld Season 2 Episode 1

No there’s no leaked episode. Show’s creator Jonathan Nolan surprised fans with a picture, that he posted on Reddit, (almost) revealing the name of Westworld season 2 episode 1. As you can see, the episode name goes “Journey into N_______.”

It obviously means “Journey into Night.” Ring a bell?

It’s the title of Ford’s new narrative. Nolan is probably preparing us for the chaotic aftermath of season one’s ending.

Westworld Season 2 Theories

There are a couple of fan theories already doing the rounds. Here we take a look at some of them that stand out:

Samurai World?

One Redditor pointed out that HBO has registered exploresamuraiworld.com and exploreshogunworld.com.

Moreover, Funko Pop launched a curious little Vinyl Figure named Musashi which led us to speculate Samurai World will have a part to play in season 2. And then we heard actor Hiroyuki Sanada (best known for The Last Ship and Lost) has been cast as Musashi.

Musashi isn’t just a fictional figure; it turns out that there was a certain master swordsman in 17th Century Japan named Miyamoto Musashi. You can read about him here.

Roman World & Medieval World?

At the New York Comic Con panel, answering a fan’s question as to whether we’ll ever see Roman World and Medieval World in the show (like they showed in the 1973 movie of the same name) Nolan said:

“I’ve been coming to New York Comic Con for seven years and I’ve never said a single thing of substance. They keep inviting me back but I’ve never answered a single question, not really. Does that answer?”

While the audience laughed, Nolan told a flat “no” to the fan.

So is there going to be a Roman world or medieval world in Westworld season 2?

Perhaps! Perhaps not! At any rate, I thought it’s a shame not to share this beautiful “Medieval World poster” made by a fan.

Westeros World?

Folks of Game of Thrones are big-time Westworld fans. Thrones author George R.R. Martin once proposed a crossover to Nolan and Joy but they already have too much on their plate. Martin even praised the show on his blog. Issac Wright who plays Brandon Stark wants Man in Black to appear in GoT. A Westworld-Game of Thrones crossover is unlikely to happen right now but never say never, right!

Will the Hosts Visit New Worlds?

The last episode of season 1 saw Maeve (Thandie Newton) finding out about her daughter and, in the very first conscious decision of her life, she gets down from the train that was supposed to take her out of the park. At the 2017 Comic-Con, speaking on Maeve, Newton wondered “Is she [Maeve] going back [to the park] for her daughter?” To this Nolan said, “I hope so. That’s what we wrote.”

As a result, it’s pretty obvious, Maeve will look for her daughter in ‘Park 1, Sector 15, Zone 3’. Park 1 could be Westworld, or Samurai World or some other world. So by the looks of it, Maeve may travel to a new world, which is very exciting, to say the least.

Will the Hosts Travel Outside the Park?

If you recall the end of season 1, Peter Abernathy was being shipped out along with the park’s precious data. This lead TV Guide to speculate that perhaps Peter Abernathy will be the first host to go outside the park. It’s easy to discard it as “just” a fan theory but actor Louise Herthum who plays Abernathy onscreen retweeted the news saying, “Ah ha… a little speculation on S2 of \W/ from @TVGuide.”

That gives us food for thought.
