Is Anthony Hopkins Returning to Westworld in Season 2? (Updated)

Westworld season 2 Anthony Hopkins: In the finale of Westworld season 1, Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) was shot in the head by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) before she randomly starts shooting every guest gather around. With Westworld season 2 returning in spring 2018, it’s a common question among fans, whether Hopkins will return in in the next season. Of course, the co-creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy won’t give you a straight answer, so we’ll try to look at hints and pick up small clues to try and answer that question.

Is Anthony Hopkins Returning to Westworld in Season 2?

We think, “yes.”

Update: “Maybe.” (For the new update, view clue no 3)

Clue No 1

In an early interview, Jonathan Nolan hinted at Dr. Ford’s possible return.

“I think the sacrifice he makes at the end of the first season is very real. I think there will be an opportunity to explore a little bit more of the backstory of how this park came to be, a little more of that story. We’ll see the character’s presence will be felt in that sense in terms of filling in a few more of the gaps about the early history of this place.”

He seems to be talking about young Anthony Hopkins’ appearance in season 2!

Clue No 2

Liv Ullmann, the Norwegian actress was working on a film with Hopkins. The actress says, that because of Hopkins’ commitment to Westworld, they’ve had to postpone works on the film.

“Anthony Hopkins was so popular in “Westworld” that he must continue with her role there for a year, she shouts.” (translated by Google)

Clue No 3

Katja Herbers, a Dutch actress is one of the new cast of Westworld season 2. And in an interview, Herbers talks about working in Westworld and specifically mentions Anthony Hopkins.

“Very nice that I’ve been in for an American tour, which has been a silent wish for a long time. To play with top actors like Anthony Hopkins, of course, is also a huge kick.” [translated by Google]

Update: Katja Herbers reached out to Westworld Daily and said her words were misrepresented.

It could be Google translator’s fault or the fault of the journalist. It’s hard to say since I don’t know Dutch. But here’s what Miss Herbers told us:

“Hi I didn’t say that.. the question was i was excited to join ww and I said I loved the first season with Hopkins & they spun it.. just FYI.”

These are the subtle hints of Hopkins’ return to Westworld.

After Miss Herbers’ clarification, I really doubt about that interview with Liv Ullmann.

Dr. Ford’s Host Theory

If you recall the last episode of season 1, right after Dr. Ford and Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) confronts Dolores, they say goodbye to each other and shake hands. The camera lingers on the hands a little too long. It struck me as odd at the time. Then one Redditor drew a comparison, recalling Old Bill and Anthony’s encounter in episode 1.

“Old Bill here was always a good listener. He was the second host we ever built. Were you with us in those days, Bernard, or was that before your time? Most were decommissioned before I was brought on, I’m afraid. They repeated themselves, broke down constantly. A simple handshake would give them away.”

Someone said on the Reddit thread that hands are what gave hosts away in the original movie on which the show is based. It’s speculated that Dr. Ford created a host after his own images and it was the host who was shot in the head while the real Ford is alive.

So we’ve laid out all the clues and we’ve told you that Anthony Hopkins may or may not return to Westworld in season 2. But we’d like to hear what you make out of all these hints?
